You can’t sing a song all about life and not include things about yourself. Neon Milk as an album uses the life lessons that the band members have learned and presented them to you to also hopefully take something from.
The group tells these stories but sometimes in generalities and sometimes using their passions to explain things that can translate into your likes and dislikes.
This track like most others also carries a lot of life lesson in it but is also has a lot of focus on the band and what their music is.
Let’s break it down!
When I’m on a beat I feel complete got lines to burn through
Waited all my life for this I guess that patience is a virtue
Doing what you love and enjoy, is more rewarding than just about anything else.
And people sleep on me like it’s past the mothafuckin’ curfew
Sort of meaning, why did people hold me back from being myself.
But I’m so sick and so fly I might as well have the bird flu
But word dude yo Earth I would never desert you
Had to take a little break to give birth to
More nouns and verbs a thousand words to earn proof
I deserve you take a breather I’ll be sure to
But for now I got the urge to rap my ass off And never stop ‘til I turn blue
Meaning that sometimes you just have to step away from it all. You give up for a while and regather your passion, your strength, your thoughts, and emotions. Ultimately you know that you also have not to give up or turn your back on everything else.
Do you believe in what we are Now that the stars look just like us Do you have love for who we are
Now that we’re up high and you’re watching
What we do
What we do
So your hearing what we have to say and our message. You supported us, and here it is. This is who we are and what we are trying to do, do you still like it and us?
This is what we do
Knock ya ass all the way to Timbukto
Now talking about them or himself a bit and going to do it with rap. With music and art, to make it enjoyable for you.
I’m stuck in a rut and lookin’ up
Realizing that I don’t have all the answers but that I also see that something needs to change.
But there ain’t nobody to look up to
No one can give me all those answers, though. While there’s lots of aid from the world ultimately one can only figure out what ones own self-needs.
I sucked at school in class acted like such a fool
I didn’t know what the motherfuck to do
Not doing well in school, growing up, in society, and the peers around you. Not fitting in or understanding and instead of getting help, or digging deeper, just turning it all into a joke.
So I dropped out and started stackin’ songs to the fuckin’ moon
Better make a quick escape time tick tickin’ away
Recap takin’ over better pick a date
To be outta town by ‘cause we flippin’
The game of life around and playin’ it a different way
Ain’t nobody else who gotta sicker brain
Sticks and stones bitch they just ricochet
Give up music yeah that’ll be the friggin day wish away
So now making a change to life. Instead of listening to others, listening to ourselves and doing what we want to do, our answers, our path.
Do You Ever does not have a big reveal from me. From what I have been able to discern on my own on this one, we have the honor nod to a typical love/girl song on an album. Going through the stages of finding and loosing love, only to be hopeful to find it again.
Part of life that is needed by most, and so definitely should have a place on any album that talks about life. Something I think we can all relate too, though, without me getting all wordsy about it.
So for this one I give you the lyrics and my intro summary, only.
Do you ever think about me
‘Cause I do think of you
Do you ever dream about me
‘Cause I do dream of you
I can still remember the moment I first saw ya
I ain’t one to gawk but think I felt my jaw drop
Hotter than august eyes like emeralds
If love is a battlefield then you must be the general
But what am I thinking you don’t know the things I been through
Plus I got a chica I’m already pretty into
But damn baby girl you got me caught up in ya undertow
I can’t even move but still I really gotta wonder though
‘Cause ya smoke more trees than a wildfire
Talkin’ ‘bout the universe and I ain’t even kinda tired
So much energy you got me feelin’ out of practice
The complete package you are what the fuck a catch is
But the sad fact is girl you the one that got away
Never found the time but trust me I did have a lot to say
But now it’s gotten way too late and I feel my brain
Do the loop like a fuckin’ hula hoop
Ever since you flew the coop and you moved
Things just ain’t been right homie
Oh that other girl she left I was happy to say bye only
That’s the bitch of it ‘cause now I’m all alone and I’m lonely
All these years later and you still the one on my mind homie
I never had a chick come along and rattle this
Cage that I’m in and you showed me the way out of it
But when you left my life sunk like battleships
Time to pick myself back up and I guess you were the catalyst
(Chorus) (Bridge 2x)
Oooh well life’s a surprise
No matter what we do
And in the darkness of night
I pray that the dawn brings you
You didn’t think we were done yet did you? It is, after all, a long album!
Change is no less deep than many of the songs on this album, but it is also less metaphor than some others and simpler to understand. The title “Change” very much says what this song is about.
It is also important to know where this song comes in terms of placement in the album. The last song they went “home”. I analyzed a bit of what that meant, and what that was about. Like life though that interpretation continues and we see some more meaning and how “home” translates into meaning in this song.
Then be sure, once I do the next song (or go listen to the album on your own!), to notice that the next song they leave home after deciding to make a large change. Much what this song is about.
Let’s analyze this bitch!
Shut so deep in this box Home is not where I thought
Revelations make their way in
Could I still read the signs
Has stillness turned me blind
Repetition is the villain
Heart says go
But my legs slow ‘cause
No matter where I go the sorrow loves to follow
Mind’s at edge
Losing sense ‘cause
Despite the highs there was no paradise in the end
The first verse is setting you up for change. It is the state you are in before you make a change in your life and perhaps the thoughts that go with it. This is where home is in this reference. That place where you typically tend to reside inside of yourself.
Doing the same thing day after day (the villain, stillness, repetition, villain, legs slow), you stop watching for opportunities or doorways that may open, but they never stop happening (revelations, signs, mind at the edge).
You thought you were at the end, at Paradise. You were home, in the place you were aiming for doing what you wanted to do. While you have moments of happy you are not satisfied nearly as often as you should be, given you got to where you wanted. It’s time to change, your heart knows it, but it is hard to begin making those changes (legs are slow!).
Change has appeared
To play its role
So take its hand or it’s taking your throat
Don’t fight the wave
Just feel its force
And take this new life before it takes yours
While the verses in this song are putting together a story for you, the chorus is an overall definition of change itself (as applied to the accompanying lyrics). Change has a role in the world. Much like the featured image of a leaf I used on this post, the leaf is a necessary change that not only takes place every year, but that also shows the world is healthy (or at least not dead yet).
Change sometimes must happen and fighting it will make things worse. If you are a surfer riding a wave, you can either ride with it, flow with it, while it may be hard and scary.. or WIPE OUT!
The Chorus is talking about making that kind of life change.
Hold so tight to my ways
But the smile never stays
Realizations turn the pages
As we go into the second verse we pick-up where we left off on the first. Only all thouse thoughts, doubts, society telling yu you are doing everything right, whatever it may be in your life. That has been going on for months, years, or even decades. Have been overlaid by a “relization” that a change must happen.
Could I change what’s within
Break the ground where I sit
I think this section is one asking one’s self, once you have come to the realization you must make the change, what do I change? Do I change my attitude, thoughts, and perceptions? Do I change something in the physical world?
Ventilation for the demons Lost and cold
New winds blow
But I fight for my life and don’t go where the waves flow
Bliss goes dead
Once again ‘cause
the only happy end is the one that you carry within
When you begin making a significant change in your life, it comes with a lot of emotion.
Those of first looking deeply into one’s self and deciding what you don’t like about yourself, and changing it. The searching of every aspect of your inner mind and questioning everything you have ever been told or taught to find your answers. As the start of a new way of life.
Carrying those discoveries into the world outside of the self. To take it to the extent to change how you live your life.
Those are wondrous and amazing things but boy, do they come with demons.
They come with constant self-doubt, worry, and terror.
They may come at the cost of alienating family or friends who are not willing to accept the personal changes you make. They come with the need to prove that you are right.. to yourself.
It is likely you may become a person that is harder on yourself than anyone else can ever be. That is because you have come to understand what you need and with that, you must also develop the self-discipline to make sure you keep yourself happy and still survive at the same time.
As your logical fights your emotions.. no, maybe they fight at first but as they learn to work together. You learn to cope with those demons. That coping can only come within.
When changes come
It’s like leaves blowin’ in the wind
‘Til these trees grow them in again
It’s like lines flowin’ out a pen never knowin’ how it ends Never knowin’ what’s around the bend louder and louder
Change once it starts moves quickly and not always under your control. You can change one thing and like a domino effect more happen. As a change is thrust upon you, such as the loss of a job, you may choose to seize that as another opportunity to change, say your career. This is due to the changes you have made to yourself.
You have learned how to be happier, you have learned you must change, you have started to change. Now it’s moving, and it’s flowing!
It’s not a hurricane, though! It’s like art, and you have some control. You’re happy, your hi on life. You walk around the house and find your smiling and stop realizing it.. as you never do that.
You don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring but you sure in the hell know your on the right track, blowing along like leaves on the winds. Solid in yourself, flowing with the world around you, altering it where you can, understanding you never know where it will end, but it just keeps getting better as your knowledge grows.
The crowd is shouting and I
Couldn’t help but notice this whole fuckin’ showbiz
Thing is kinda bogus it should be a bonus Doin’ what you love has gotta come first Money’s second so I gotta focus
A personal reference to the changes they are making and how these life lessons apply to themselves. At the same time though a lot is taking place in the last line I quoted there.
First that when you do what you love, I believe that it wouldn’t matter what that is, that you will most likely find that terms like “hobby,” “work,” and “job,” begin to have all new meanings.
I currently (for six more weeks until unemployed) work a 9-5 job in addition to launching my own business. I get off “work,” and I go home to “work.” Only the latter is so much fun; it seems wrong to call it “work.”
Another aspect of this line is doing what you love comes first, money second. You will notice it does not say you don’t need money! You need it for basic needs, but life is more enjoyable if you are living it doing what you love and have just enough money to get by, as opposed to being rich and doing something you hate. I feel that is what is being said here.
Iny my life, I am trying to live by the creed “Figure out what you love, and find how to do it.” The first part is not easy, but once done the second part is where the work begins. As you can’t do it if you can’t afford to eat or purchase the things necessary to do it. So income is a part of it, but that is the secondary part.
On the hocus pocus that my flow is when it’s hopeless
Even when it seems like everybody jokes at My expense it don’t make no sense like Offering a cokehead a couple sodas
Let’s break this one down a different way. Ok, so obviously you have a reference of addiction here, such as the cokehead. How does that equate to you making changes in your life, being an addiction comparable to the example? Simple.
Keep in mind if you have gotten to this point of making these changes and implementing them, you have all those demons we talked about. So now you’re making changes to your life and you have other people that you interact with, maybe for other things or other reasons.
They ask you what you are doing, or you have told people. They joke about it “Hey Henry, how’s that new song coming?” with big smiles. Maybe it’s the parent telling you to get a haircut and a real job.
See, all the sheep around you have been taught they have to think a certain way, and they haven’t broken out of the mold you are trying to get out of so that you can be who you are and who you want to be.
So all those people around you, in their way will sabotage you if you let them. They may not mean to sometimes, they just are too closed minded to look outside the box. Others will mean to out of jealousy, spite, and self-loathing. The lesson here is, the cans of Coke are going to be offered to you, daily. Avoid them as much as you can, but learn the discipline to say no. You do that by continually revisiting what you are doing and who you are.Change means continual self-evaluation.
Keep my mind open like a lotus
I suppose it’s how I wrote this opus
And it’s dope as fuck and now you knowin’ who’s the coldest
All you gotta do is show me where the throne is
Plague ‘em like a million locusts
I slay ‘em with the mic and kill opponents
‘Cause it’s my moment and I will own it
But I’m beggin’ for change like I’m still homeless
I don’t want to dig too deep into the individual parts of this section but look at it as a whole. What Dan is rapping here is that he’s making his changes (the are never truly made, it is a continual process), and he’s happy, he’s loving it, he’s doing it, and he sees why it’s good.
In short, it was his ideas, work, efforts, CHANGE that lead him to this point. It is his moment and no one else’s, he has to own it. It’s not just about being good or the best. It’s about doing the best you can because you are doing what you choose and wanted, and are choosing. When you stop owning that, then you need to move to something else you do own.
Because owning that moment is about love, passion, enjoyment. Without those things, you did not make the right change. That may not give you what you need forever, and you may require more change some day. For now though Own that damn moment you choose and that makes you happy!
So why is he still begging for change then? He’s made his change!
Not at all. Change has many aspects to it and remember when money is second? Ok so you’re doing what you love, you are happy or at least more comfortable, and that feeling is growing more as you listen to your heart each day. Secondly, though, you still need to pay the bills.
Ok, so another one wrapped up and ready to go out! As always, these are my opinions, not fact. If they are stated in a way that makes them sound as if fact it is only how I am expressing what I believe them to mean. This series of articles on this album are being done with the permission of the band and producer.
First, my apologies for delays on the continuation of this project! I feel a bit behind on things for a while and am jubilant to be continuing where I left off.
These pieces may not seem like a like of content, but regardless of that they can take three to four hours each and so while I hate it, sometimes they must be sat aside until I have a completely free evening 🙂
Excuses out of the way lets talk about Sirius B.
So let’s Recap them Lyrics and discuss!
Buckle up your seatbelts we about to leave on a road trip
The first line is just an intro primarily, but I think in a way it is also saying “Listen to us please, and pay close attention because what we are going to say is important.” Let’s see what they have to say!
I feel this song is very much using the metaphor of taking a ship into space, and going into space, as a journey through your mind, the state of mind, and going to a place where you are happy. A sort of a break from the everyday things that drag you down and make life “hard” or take away your happiness. So it’s time to take a journey back to a place where you are happy.
Except there’s no road our ship takes off like a bomb exploded
No road here has the distinct meaning of they are talking about traveling through space. The deeper meaning is that they are traveling a path that is in the mind.
Stopped for gas at the Saturn but it was 150 a liter
So we hop on over to Venus it’s at least a little bit cheaper
And I had just left the station when I had to get off on the shoulder
License and registration do ya know why I pulled you over
You were doin’ 305 in a 200 million
The man, always putting you down, stopping you from doing what you want to. Society also does the same with its pressures to conform to it and to think the same, rather than going outside of what has been deemed accepted.
This can happen when you are going to unusual places even within your mind.
Also, that as you explore yourself, you will have those thoughts, beliefs, and pressure in your mind slowing you down but you just have to get past it.
You have to question everything so that you can come to your own understandings.
You’re lucky I like ya music son I saw you chuggin’ that Killians
Killian’s is a damned fine beer! Before microbreweries became common in my area and you drank nothing but the standard grocery store shelved beers, this was my beer of choice.
But he let me go I get back fine I step off the ship
Breaking away from those thoughts that are holding you back in your mind.
I’m finally home I take a deep breath as my skin wets from the mist
And try to think of Earth but it’s almost like I forget it exists
The only thing I know is that they makin’ a mess of that bitch
I think this is all about perspectives. Thinking in larger viewpoints and seeing things from the outside. Looking at how we treat our planet and the life on it, rather than being a part of it.
Takin’ a walk through the forest all the flowers lean toward us
You can tell they adore us and when the animals saw us
They lined up everyone from small as a flea to as big as a tyrannosaurus
And they started singing for us can’t remember it all
But I think the chorus was like
A union and sharing with everything. Plan, animal, and insect alike. The importance of life, all life in the world. Something that as you search yourself, understand yourself, and become happy that often weighs heavily on the mind in my experience.
(Chorus) Hello there
Welcome to the place you’re from
What is important is how this line is said. It says “The place you’re from,” it does not say “Home.” I feel that this is very much a reference to home, being a state of mind and not a physical place.
That at this part in the song you have reached within your inner mind that place of peace.
You’ve been away for far too long So sit back it’s all fine now
And just know that there’s a place for
You with us tonight
I feel that this is all talking about a place of comfort for you or within yourself.
Kick back with a six pack I’m good
The leaders back in the hood
Watch ships zigzag through the sky
Pop a couple Tictacs
He’s doing what makes him happy. It speaks about being happy and finding a place of happiness in yourself. Not doing physical things.
I know you’d Wanna be here
fact is ya could
Wanna make sure that’s understood
But ya gotta find your own way here
There ain’t no GPS trackin’ the route
You’d love it wanna take a tour
Something anyone that ever finds their own place of peace within themselves will understand, is that no one else could have put them there.
There are things you learn and that can be taught that give you tools to help you find that place, but ultimately only you can travel in your own mind.
That’s more of a metaphor here we can teleport
Go anywhere when we hella bored
Saw a car what’s that, what the hell’s it for
We can blink and be there we alien
You can travel anywhere in your own mind, once you learn the routes to take.
We don’t smoke weed we smoke uranium
You know you’re high when ya cranium Explodes with the sound of a crowded stadium
20 hour nights makin’ moonshine outta moonlight
We don’t need to eat but we keep food around so we can have food fights
You should hear the music homie we never do whats been done twice
Uh, better get some ice partys go ‘til third sunrise
Fuck with us that’d be unwise we could take you out in a burst of heat
But that’ll never happen ‘cause we believe in universal peace
So come party with us where the shots vanish mysteriously
And seriously that’s how we do on Sirius B
This is all much as we have seen throughout the song. We went up this huge hill if you will, and now we are on a straight piece of flatland racing along.
Metaphors for being happy and explorings one’s self. This can be done with other people is both a metaphor and at the same time it is not.
It mean’s share the journey with them. Explore yourself. Question everything, and then you will have a connection with each other.
Also enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Teleporting from earlier’s, cars, ships, and the continual fast movement of party, drinking, songs. Is all about enjoying the journey, not just the destination.
That’s what’s up That’s what’s up That’s what’s up That’s what’s up
Thatthatthatthat’s what’s up
Awwww man, and with that, it is time for me to wrap up this journey, which I took with Recap. I hope that those who didn’t fully understand the journey may now enjoy it more. Thank you for tagging along with me on this trip.
Remember, this series is being done with permission and is only my thoughts and impressions of their music. I may get some things wrong, I may put meaning where they did not intend it, and I am fully sure I’m not getting it all (Sometimes I have revelations by an even deeper meaning in a line, and then forget it again.. simply because their music has so much depth!).
You know I love you. I know your busy. Im busy to, very often and that is why I am lame and am still doing these peices, which I meant to have done when your new album launched. But… I very much would like a video for this song! *cracks wip*
You know that was a joke, very much in the reference of Richard Garriott getting fan mail and how the format it almost always was, which I figured you would get, being.. right. Although that video ONE OF THESE DAYS, would be epic :).
My favorite band, The Recap Band, and friends the Space Bards, recently put out a new album “Pronoia.” Frankly, it’s bad ass.
This was recently followed by the posting of a video for “Wrong War”! If you missed it here, you go! Also for those waiting on the next Lyric analytical from Neon Milk, bear with me. I will still be doing the rest of the album, but I am playing catch up from the last couple of weeks. It’ll be there in its own time, but it shall come, and it shall be good!
Be sure to follow the link to YouTube, give it a thumbs up, and drop a comment that Stile sent you!
Remember, this is only my opinions and even if stated in an accurate way is not meant more then as my opinion.
Hello, everyone! I apologize that his piece has been a little slow in the last couple of week. If I can, I am going to try to do the rest of the songs fairly quickly soon. I have quite a few articles I need to write and will be working on catching up, so bear with me!
Happy for now to get this one out to you. So let us listen to and see if we cannot understand the song “Fed Up” by Recap better!
I’m sick of waitin’ on this world to change
Guess I’ll pack up
My bags I’m leavin’ on a space plane
Guess I’m fed up
Guess I’m fed up
So the chorus of this song is a summary of the general theme of the song. Overall a turning of your back on the world and other people sort of thing. I do not want to go into the full theme here, though, as it is better to understand it from the lyrics, so read on.
(Sigh) Earth what the hell’s the matter with you Can’t ya see that your status as a civilized planet Is shatterin’ can you see the pattern yet
Our aliens are talking to us, asking us why aren’t we logically looking at our choices and decisions, what they are causing to happen, and making a change. I saw a Meme recently that said something along the lines of Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and those that do will get to watch it repeated because no one else will. Something along those lines. Very apt to this verse!
Think you’ve come far but the blood’s still splatterin’ All over the world people die with teeth chatterin’ From the cold while these brats badgerin’
In general, I believe that as a species we feel we have accomplished a lot. We have! Computers, Nano Technology, Space travel, take your pick. Yet, with all of our accomplishments in many areas, we haven’t grown nearly as much regarding how we care for each other, and life on the planet. As a whole, we have remained a very selfish species. We have improved, but we still have a long way to go as there is a lot of NEEDLESS suffering in this world.
Fuckin’ dad for an ipad again and again
Not only being materialistic but needlessly so.
Y’all evolve slower than a mothafuckin’ mannekin
We know and have known for a long time know about all kinds of issues, concerns, problems, whatever you want to call them, that exist in this world. Some of these things are not easy to resolve, but some are. They continue to be issues. It’s insanity to want everyone to be the same, yet that has been the “social” acceptable norm for much of history.
Why does it always have to end this way
With me dismayed over all the horror every which way
Every time you feel like maybe we are progressing, things are changing. Something happens that makes you wonder how far we have progressed. No matter how hard you try and work, sometimes it feels like we continue to do and repeat the same mistakes. It sometimes feels like two steps back and one forward rather than two forward and one back.
If I were to bet I’d be takin’ the odds
You keep killin’ each other over fuckin’ paper and God
No matter how good it starts to look, it is starting to feel like it will just go wrong every time. Something will cause it. Money, religion, maybe politics or something else. Regardless when you look at the future it begins to feel like that is the history we are doomed to just keep repeating.
So let’s be realistic there ain’t a way to fix it
And if I stay here I’ma end up with my wrists slit
So make a quick list couple wings and a stick shift
Shootin’ for the stars guess we gonna need a ship kids
The metaphor on requiring a ship to leave is that people just find escapes rather than try to deal with things. Whatever your escape may be, music, books, games. That doesn’t mean those things are always an escape, but sometimes they can be. When they are used in a way to just hide and get away from the real world, is the metaphor being spoken of here.
That’s it I’m gettin’ off of this bitch yo
Earth is just a shitshow of schizo sickos
At each other’s throats like pit bulls it’s so Obvious they need help but fuck this yo Phase 1 I went and bought an RV
But it hardly would start we needed parts see Couldn’t fall asleep all week and 3 days Searchin’ for flux capacitators on ebay Scourin’ all of the yard sales
Gettin parts mailed to my house hey are there
Any packages from Carbondale with new hardware
I don’t need a bumper when there ain’t no poles or guard rails
Up there where we goin’ we ain’t gonna slow for no one
We don’t need no chauffeur bro when I can drive on my own and solo Hopin’ that the heat ain’t broken oh you know we coulda used Cloaking for the cops oh well guess it’ll have to do
This is all just a great fun metaphor extending on the previous one, for flavor and enjoyment. Except that there is also an underlying reference of building a ship and going to a planet is all a metaphor for withdrawing, however, it is you do it. Into your safe place and own sanctuaries.
In some cases, it can also be a preparation for suicide as a way to not have to deal with the world anymore.
(Chorus 2x) (Outro)
I’m up all night daydreamin’
Every time I close my eyes I see the way gleamin’ (Guess I’m fed up)
Goodbye to pain and sorrow
I can’t wait anymore I leave tomorrow
(Guess I’m fed up)
I’m up all night daydreamin’
Every time I close my eyes I see the way gleamin’ (Guess I’m fed up)
Goodbye to pain and sorrow
I can’t wait anymore I leave tomorrow
(Guess I’m fed up)
We leave out with the chorus again, and move onto the next song!
These articles are being done with the permissions of the band members and producer. They have no idea what I will be typing and see it when you do. These are my opinions and while they may be represented in a factual manner that is only for purposes of my attempts at making things more enjoyable to read. They are not meant to serve as the actual meanings of these songs, only my interpretations.
I was jubilant with how this entire pieces came out the other night for Secrets. Although in general even though I am doing Starship now, I am looking more forward to some of the songs further into the album. While everything on this album has a lot of meaning to me, some songs delve deeper and have multiple things going on making it a lot more to share with you. I thought about skipping around a bit, but no.. I will do this in order. Again, these are my opinions, not fact.
So in as much as in we left off with Secrets last time, I also believe that the song did the same thing. The song ended with our farmer going ballistic and raising a fuss, but the alien shrugged it off and moved on. That’s what the song represented, and we are now going to look at “Phone Home (Starship)” where in my opinion the band members are also telling you about themselves and who they are, again using the same metaphor I explained.
So that last song was to say to you… I am different then what is the norm of society, and here are stereotypes to show you what I mean. I am breaking away from that, trying to become myself, and now I am going to tell you a bit more about who I am.
So here we go, Analyzing the Lyrics of “Starship” by The Recap Band, From the Album “Neon Milk”!
I’m here from another dimension
May I please just have your attention
I am different than you and as a result, I have spent my life having to live differently than you. I want to tell you about it.
I been sensin’ a lot of tension on your planet
You got a long ways to ascension
But me I’m a higher intelligence
Observing the universes elegance
Out in space smokin’ on a fat bowl
Things are changing in recent years. Minorities are being looked at different, equality and what that means is expanding. The geek culture is starting to be more accepted, women in gaming, all sorts of things that are ways of life and hobbies to many over the years, are now starting to come out. This is what that tension speaks about. Whatever it is about you that isolated you from the majority of people around you and how that affects life for us all as a species.
You also have all the changes being made in the world, the progress. America has it’s first black president, gay rights are approved, states legalize marijuana, and so on. Things like Change.org, Kickstarter, and Patreon are causing changes faster than ever before, but there’s still so much more to happen.
We still have a long way to go, though. People still judge without trying to understand. People are still sometimes outcasts for their beliefs or ways of life. It’s getting better, but long ways to go.
I’ve been one of these people because of my choices or interests. As such I have a viewpoint or perspective from outside of it. Not only have I live in this perspective, but I have been studying it. From different sides, opinions trying to learn the best way, the right way. I want to share it, see what you think so that maybe we can find a better way together.
Fuck the world I’ma stick it to a black hole
Huh, people talkin’ that ching chang
But you know I gotta keep the balance like a ying yang
When I’m on the mic I might cause another big bang
That’s just how I do when I’m goin’ in mang
You can’t do things because that’s the way society says it should be, or that everyone you know tells you that’s how it should be. Fuck that; I am going to do it my way, the way that will make me happy.
All these things that other people are saying, that’s not right for me. Instead, I have to find my balance, a way to be who I am and still live in your world and try to be accepted by it.
I’m going to speak up about it; I am going to tell you who I am and why. I am not going to hide it anymore; some people may disagree, but more people are listening and open to the changes that are happening, and I want to be a part of that and help to make it happen.
If you ever turn on your TV
And see me land my ship in DC
Oh don’t worry you got nothin’ to fear, kids
I’m only here to help build more pyramids
I want to be seen and heard because I want to help. I have some insights, and the world can be a better place. It is getting better, changes are happening but only if we come together as an entire world and build big things, can we truly accomplish. It;s, not something to be scared of because it’s just a way of life that makes you happier. It doesn’t cost anything; it’s just about understanding.
Where was my starship all these days
Why am I down here anyway
Starship me away
The Starship is the path. The right way to live and to be happy. Why have I spent my time hiding and being afraid, and trying to fit in rather than just embracing who I am? Time to take the correct path.
You can’t get there on your own, though, hence the Starship metaphor. It helps you get there. In this case, that help could be anything, understanding, other people, etc…
Now I’m not sayin’ it was aliens but
It was aliens definitely was
Gave me the skills to keep the house shakin’ Musta been them it wasn’t God or Satan
It was other people like myself and their belief in me that is helping me to figure out how to live. The right way to do this, and the energy to keep going. The progress and changes that are already taking place, people that are causing change. It wasn’t any religious belief or cult that helped me; it was just ordinary citizens being themselves and accepting me for who I am.
I’m still just patiently waitin’
For the day when I don’t have to wear a fake grin
Ain’t perfect but I hide my flaws well
I just cover ‘em up like Roswell
I want to be myself all the time. I am figuring out how I want to live and how to be who I am. The worlds being more accepting of individualism and judging less. It’s not there though but I know how to hide them when I need to. Really well so that people don’t know I am different.
If starships are meant to fly
Then maybe my hard ships are meant to go byebye
Most of us just hope and sigh
You lookin’ for a better life homie so am I
If there is a way to do this, get where I am going and to be happy I can put the past behind. Why do we have to be unhappy? Most people don’t try they just give in and mold with society, learn to accept it and be as happy as they can. Trudging along in their life but hoping for something better. We’re the same, we just want to live in this world and make the best of it. Let me be happy the way I need to, I am not hurting you.
That’s why I’m up on this stage rappin’
Y’all never know what could possibly happen
Snare is clappin’ bass is boomin’ Almost makes me wish I was human
I’m just trying to say to everyone. I don’t want to hurt you; I just want to be me. If I talk about it, maybe It will help. Maybe it could cause real change to happen in the world. Hell, I am having fun just conveying the word, I almost wish I could just make music and not have to worry about all the other stuff in life. That what I want, to do what I enjoy and not worry about how others see me or how I fit in.
Where was my starship all these days Phphphone home I got to phone home Why am I down here anyway
Starship me away
I feel this is sufficiently explained at this point 🙂
The ships are aware. They are conscious beings of a sort, and are directly connected to the consciousness of the socalled occupants or
pilots of the craft.
I’m in this world
But I’m not of this world
(I’m in this world)
I may be a part of this planet, living on it, working on it. At the same time, I am not, though, as I have not been made welcome.
Pick up the radio to phone home
Nothin’ but static and no dial tone
Gotta get used to bein’ alone
It’s a big world that I’ma go roam
Home is a metaphor for a place that you are, in which you are happy, warm and fuzzy. Welcome, and there are those around you who don’t judge you. Finding that place is hard, though. So just have to settle for what I have and maybe look around a lot to try to find it.
Pick up the radio to phone home Naw fuck that I’m in my own zone
When I leave I’m gonna tear a hole in the sky
That’s bigger than the ones in the mothafuckin’ ozone
No, that’s the wrong way to do it. I need to MAKE my home. I need to create it with everything I have. Give it every part of myself and encourage others to do the same. I need to make sure I can’t be ignored.
Phphphone home I got to phone home
Starship me away
Phphphone home I got to phone home
Starship me away
Phphphone home I got to phone home
Starship me away
Phphphone home I got to phone home
Phphphone home I got to phone home
I have to keep trying, I have to get through the static and do whatever it takes to find my home and where it is.
That wraps up this song. As you will find from my continuation of this segment on The Caverns, the songs in the album not only have individual meaning but an overall path that they follow to grow upon each other.
See you next time, and I will bring the Vanilla Vodka!
Let’s do the first track, but before I dive into that, I need to discuss the album a bit. Everything in this post even when stated as if it sounds like a fact, is just my personal opinions.
The album itself has an overall theme of two aliens who have crash landed on earth, spend some time on land, leave, then come back. This is a metaphor for the artists themselves.
We all feel different at times from others in our lives. At times, we think about who we are, who the people around us are, the meaning of life. Perhaps because of your interests and hobbies or the way you approach life and what your goals are, society does not make you feel like you belong. Like… You are an alien.
The title track “Secrets” is on the apparent front seemingly a song about these aliens who land on earth and they have all these secrets that people want from them. I think beyond that though this song is about a lot more.
The secrets referred to are a metaphor for something else. Their experiences, their life lessons, and how they have interpreted them. Also at the same time, it can mean the things they keep to themselves, the mask they wear in the day to day world to be more accepted. Let’s dive into the lyrics now.
I’ve got a mind full of secrets
A whole mountainside full of causes and reasons
A whole mountainside full of causes and reasons is talking about the examination of yourself, others around you, the world, the meaning of the life the universe and everything. Past actions, regrets, future choices.
Shining my light inside the shadows
This line is talking about that self-reflection of oneself. Searching in your mind and the world around you, to look in places where others may not, to find answers.
The life that I live is just an echo, echo
The wearing of a mask, being different then you want to be so as to be more accepted by society. At stores, your job, wherever it is. Pretending to like sports, or wearing a polo when you are a t-shirt guy. Not talking about your latest hobby because since it’s not the in the thing you either fear being pushed away, judged, not understood.
Woa wait a minute how the hell did I get here
Think I need another minute just to let my head clear
Looks like I’m layin’ in some kinda bed, weird
Who are all these people dressed in white
With the red smeared on ‘em?
They say it was a smooth procedure
The specimen’s alive no signs of fever
Yup it’s breathing fine and it’s heart is beating normally
Nurse sedate it ‘cause when it wakes up it might get ornery
Our aliens crash here on earth and what happens? They are being taken apart and analyzed, trying to figure out what makes them tick. This translates into being judged, evaluated, and even others trying to change you because you are different.
But you can’t corner me like that so I broke the straps
Haulin’ ass runnin’ fast nobody can hold me back
Comatose, I will never take another nap like that
Feelin’ kinda stiff I think I need somebody to crack my back
That’s how I escape the lab now I’m on a brand new planet
Still strugglin’ for a way to understand you, dammit
You say there’s nothing new but I’ma fill that deficit
Y’all humans didn’t know who in the fuck you were messin’ with
Choosing to break free and to be true to one’s self. To stop hiding from the world and instead to just be who you are. Still trying to understand everyone and everything around you but not giving up yourself while doing it. Ready to stand up and fight to be yourself.
First contact I came across a farmhouse
Walk up slowly on the lawn with my arms out
Rockin’ back and forth on his chair turned his head to me
Spit a wad of black shit out then he said to me
Approaching people and the world in peace, while being who you are.
Evening to you neighbor you can can call me Mister Doe
My wife’s name is Jane all the kids have moved out though
Can you see my white fence there with all the pickets?
My truck’s pretty big too unlike my penis
But did I mention that my pension has a 401k?
My wife and I’ll retire in the Florida Keys?
(ahp) See you later neighbor that’s my dinner bell
Burgers and fries but first we’ll pray so we don’t go to hell
You find the rejection you fear of course, as that is why you always hid to begin with. The stereotypes in these verses, the 401K, the white picket fence, retiring to Florida. All these things and the other are to show that this is what the world expects of you. This is how I am, you’re the same right? You’re human because you want to be made from a cookie cutter mold and be just like the rest of us?
What the fuck is hell bitch?
(coughs) Could you watch the language?
Look I just need a cold beer and some kinda sandwich
Don’t you come closer or I’ll shoot!
You don’t have the grapes
Still took a shot, nice miss, I disapparate
You’re asking because you don’t understand. As a result, you are attacked, rejected, your not the same. Ignore it, don’t let it weigh you down, continue to be you, just do it elsewhere and don’t let people like this bring you down. If you do, they win. Don’t judge, don’t sink to their level, shrug it off and move on.
What? Your dinner’s getting cold.
I just saw an alien.
I just saw an alien!
Are you drunk again?
(stutters) Dammit woman! Just get me the telephone!
911, what’s your emergency?
Hello?! There’s aliens!
Excuse me, sir?
I said there’s goddamn aliens!
Sir, sir, please calm down.
Calm down? Don’t tell me to calm down! I was outside and this
martian came and started cussing at me and I tried to shoot, and he
disappeared! Call the police! No, call the army!!
The overreactions of people because they find you different. That need to call upon others like themselves or that pretend to be like them. To group up so that they may combine forces and get rid of you. So that they may feel better about themselves and that there is only their one answer.
That is the Recap for this song by Recap! Next time I will be doing the second song on the album Starship!
Until then, remember. Be Who and what you want to be, for yourself. Don’t do it for others and instead, take a chance. Live the life you want, treat others how you want to be treated, and you may find happiness brothers and sisters.
