Analyzing the Lyrics of “Sirius B” by The Recap Band, From the Album “Neon Milk”
First, my apologies for delays on the continuation of this project! I feel a bit behind on things for a while and am jubilant to be continuing where I left off.
These pieces may not seem like a like of content, but regardless of that they can take three to four hours each and so while I hate it, sometimes they must be sat aside until I have a completely free evening 🙂
Excuses out of the way lets talk about Sirius B.
So let’s Recap them Lyrics and discuss!
Buckle up your seatbelts we about to leave on a road trip
The first line is just an intro primarily, but I think in a way it is also saying “Listen to us please, and pay close attention because what we are going to say is important.” Let’s see what they have to say!
I feel this song is very much using the metaphor of taking a ship into space, and going into space, as a journey through your mind, the state of mind, and going to a place where you are happy. A sort of a break from the everyday things that drag you down and make life “hard” or take away your happiness. So it’s time to take a journey back to a place where you are happy.
Except there’s no road our ship takes off like a bomb exploded
No road here has the distinct meaning of they are talking about traveling through space. The deeper meaning is that they are traveling a path that is in the mind.
Stopped for gas at the Saturn but it was 150 a liter
So we hop on over to Venus it’s at least a little bit cheaper
And I had just left the station when I had to get off on the shoulder
License and registration do ya know why I pulled you over
You were doin’ 305 in a 200 million
The man, always putting you down, stopping you from doing what you want to. Society also does the same with its pressures to conform to it and to think the same, rather than going outside of what has been deemed accepted.
This can happen when you are going to unusual places even within your mind.
Also, that as you explore yourself, you will have those thoughts, beliefs, and pressure in your mind slowing you down but you just have to get past it.
You have to question everything so that you can come to your own understandings.
You’re lucky I like ya music son I saw you chuggin’ that Killians
Killian’s is a damned fine beer! Before microbreweries became common in my area and you drank nothing but the standard grocery store shelved beers, this was my beer of choice.
But he let me go I get back fine I step off the ship
Breaking away from those thoughts that are holding you back in your mind.
I’m finally home I take a deep breath as my skin wets from the mist
And try to think of Earth but it’s almost like I forget it exists
The only thing I know is that they makin’ a mess of that bitch
I think this is all about perspectives. Thinking in larger viewpoints and seeing things from the outside. Looking at how we treat our planet and the life on it, rather than being a part of it.
Takin’ a walk through the forest all the flowers lean toward us
You can tell they adore us and when the animals saw us
They lined up everyone from small as a flea to as big as a tyrannosaurus
And they started singing for us can’t remember it all
But I think the chorus was like
A union and sharing with everything. Plan, animal, and insect alike. The importance of life, all life in the world. Something that as you search yourself, understand yourself, and become happy that often weighs heavily on the mind in my experience.
(Chorus) Hello there
Welcome to the place you’re from
What is important is how this line is said. It says “The place you’re from,” it does not say “Home.” I feel that this is very much a reference to home, being a state of mind and not a physical place.
That at this part in the song you have reached within your inner mind that place of peace.
You’ve been away for far too long So sit back it’s all fine now
And just know that there’s a place for
You with us tonight
I feel that this is all talking about a place of comfort for you or within yourself.
Kick back with a six pack I’m good
The leaders back in the hood
Watch ships zigzag through the sky
Pop a couple Tictacs
He’s doing what makes him happy. It speaks about being happy and finding a place of happiness in yourself. Not doing physical things.
I know you’d Wanna be here
fact is ya could
Wanna make sure that’s understood
But ya gotta find your own way here
There ain’t no GPS trackin’ the route
You’d love it wanna take a tour
Something anyone that ever finds their own place of peace within themselves will understand, is that no one else could have put them there.
There are things you learn and that can be taught that give you tools to help you find that place, but ultimately only you can travel in your own mind.
That’s more of a metaphor here we can teleport
Go anywhere when we hella bored
Saw a car what’s that, what the hell’s it for
We can blink and be there we alien
You can travel anywhere in your own mind, once you learn the routes to take.
We don’t smoke weed we smoke uranium
You know you’re high when ya cranium Explodes with the sound of a crowded stadium
20 hour nights makin’ moonshine outta moonlight
We don’t need to eat but we keep food around so we can have food fights
You should hear the music homie we never do whats been done twice
Uh, better get some ice partys go ‘til third sunrise
Fuck with us that’d be unwise we could take you out in a burst of heat
But that’ll never happen ‘cause we believe in universal peace
So come party with us where the shots vanish mysteriously
And seriously that’s how we do on Sirius B
This is all much as we have seen throughout the song. We went up this huge hill if you will, and now we are on a straight piece of flatland racing along.
Metaphors for being happy and explorings one’s self. This can be done with other people is both a metaphor and at the same time it is not.
It mean’s share the journey with them. Explore yourself. Question everything, and then you will have a connection with each other.
Also enjoy the journey, not just the destination. Teleporting from earlier’s, cars, ships, and the continual fast movement of party, drinking, songs. Is all about enjoying the journey, not just the destination.
That’s what’s up That’s what’s up That’s what’s up That’s what’s up
Thatthatthatthat’s what’s up
Awwww man, and with that, it is time for me to wrap up this journey, which I took with Recap. I hope that those who didn’t fully understand the journey may now enjoy it more. Thank you for tagging along with me on this trip.
Remember, this series is being done with permission and is only my thoughts and impressions of their music. I may get some things wrong, I may put meaning where they did not intend it, and I am fully sure I’m not getting it all (Sometimes I have revelations by an even deeper meaning in a line, and then forget it again.. simply because their music has so much depth!).
Dear Recap Band,
You know I love you. I know your busy. Im busy to, very often and that is why I am lame and am still doing these peices, which I meant to have done when your new album launched. But… I very much would like a video for this song! *cracks wip*
You know that was a joke, very much in the reference of Richard Garriott getting fan mail and how the format it almost always was, which I figured you would get, being.. right. Although that video ONE OF THESE DAYS, would be epic :).
